Name of Work

Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827)

Ludwig van Beethoven (December 17, 1770 – March 26, 1827) is hailed as the composer who changed the 18th century (classical) conception of music to the emotive and lush 19th-century (romantic) conception. In the days of Mozart and Haydn, music was prized for its subtle simplicity and efficiency, smooth sound, and ordered construction of regulated musical patterns. Beethoven changed the common preconception that music’s aesthetic value lay in order, to a view that its aesthetic value lay in the composer, the musician, and the listener’s emotional response to the music. To achieve this, he introduced the ideas of the germ motive (a short rhythmic or melodic motif that appears throughout a piece), the organic composition (movements of a piece relating to other movements), and programmatic music (instrumental music that follows a story or program) as more important than chord progressions.
His life equally straddling both the 18th and 19th centuries, Beethoven composed in the classical styles in his youth, but became more experimental and innovative in his later years. As a result of his innovations, chamber music was understood to require active listening to experience the emotionality of the music. Goethe noted about the romantic string quartet, “a listener could engage in rational internal discourse – conversation and perhaps even argument – while seeming to enjoy the quartets as ‘pure’ music.”

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote roughly 85 chamber works as well as countless other works of varying genres such as symphonies, opera, ballet, and piano works.
